Play T-Shirts

Our t-shirts for the play went home this afternoon. They are super cute!!! If you see Lori Swindall make sure you thank her for her generous donation of the shirts and the time she put into making them perfect for us!!! Kids are to wear them to school on Thursday with jeans, leggings, or red pants.

Party

Our big party is not tomorrow, we are just opening gifts and having pizza because Kate and Campbell will not be with us for the party. The things you are bringing for the party are for Friday at 9:00 :)

Tomorrow

Don't forget to send your gift for the gift swap tomorrow if you have not sent it already. Everyone has to bring a gift to get to play the game! Also, don't forget we are having a pizza party for lunch tomorrow. Just sent a juice or 2 :)

Lunch Wednesday

For lunch Wednesday I will be getting pizza for the class as a Christmas surprise :) so please just sent a drink/juice on Wednesday unless your child does not like pizza! 

Christmas Store

The Christmas store is going on so if you would like to send some money with your child that is perfectly find. I will be sending a few at a time each day to look.

Christmas Family

Pike has decided to sponsor a family that has never been able to have a Christmas. This family includes a mother, 11 year old, and a 3 year old. Instead of everyone sending something I would like to take up a donation from our whole class to give to Mrs. Baggett so she can go buy things they need. If you feel in your heart to give to this family please do. We have to turn in the money by Friday so if you would like to send a donation please do so by Friday morning. Thanks in advance!!

Christmas Gift Update

We have changed the price range for the Christmas gifts. It is now $10-$15.

Tests

I have graded some of last week's tests but not all of them. They will be sent home tomorrow. Our reading tests were not very good so they were scaled 10 points.

Language Test

This week's language test will be on present-tense verbs and commas in a series.

Christmas Gifts

We will be doing Christmas gifts a little different this year. Girls will buy a gift for a girl and boys will buy a boy gift. As they you bring them in they will be numbered (B1-B9 for boys, G1-G7 for girls.) Next Wednesday we will do our gift part of the party because we will have 2 absent on Friday for the party. Each student will draw a number that day and they will get that numbered gift from under the tree. I think this will work out best for everyone. :) So please have your gift here by next Tuesday, December 17th to make sure everyone will have a gift on Wednesday.

Language Test

Our language test tomorrow will cover: action verbs, contractions, and abbreviations.

Christmas Play Costumes

We have found all of the costumes from last year's Christmas play. They were not ruined so we have costumes for all of our class! No need to get anything :)

Christmas Play Week

Here is some info for the Christmas play and that week:

We will not be having test of any sort that week. It will be far too busy for us to have test.

Our dress rehearsal will be Tuesday, December 17th. I am not sure about the time yet but I will let you know as soon as I find out.

Wednesday, December 18th is POLAR EXPRESS DAY. Students can wear their PJs that day. We will watch Polar Express, do Polar Express activities, and that afternoon have milk and cookies with Santa. This will be a FUN day!!!!

Our play will be at 10:00 on Thursday, December 19th. Your child is free to leave after the play if they would like.

Christmas party will be at 9:00 Friday, December 20th.

Here is a list of parts in the play that need costumes:

These are the only parts that need costumes out of our class. We are asking that you try to find a costume for them to wear. For example: kings can be a robe and a crown of some sort. If you cannot find anything please let me know in time and I will do what I can to help. :)

Everyone else will have a shirt to wear that day. Ideal Graphics has generously donated Christmas play shirts for everyone to wear. A BIG THANK YOU TO THEM!!!!

PTO Christmas Store

 It is scheduled for 12/11/13 from 7:30 am-3:00pm and 12/12/13 from 7:30 am-1:00pm.  Gifts range in price from $1-$10 with most gifts falling in the $3-$6 range.  Gift wrapping is available free of charge. Volunteers are also needed to work. If you will be available one of those days to work please let Traci Leverette know.  

AR

I am updating everyone's AR folder today. When our computers were down for those 2 and a half weeks we got very behind on AR. I have moved some of the goals down and if I see they need to go down more between now and the end of the 9 weeks I will move them. I started everyone a new paper for December and have written down the tests they have taken for this month. Their goals are at the top the the new paper and how many points they have is written on the back. If you have any questions please email me. Let's get a lot of reading done in these next 2 weeks so everyone can meet their goal. Please sing their AR folder so they can take a test. I am going to start checking it before they take a test so I will know they are ready for sure and you have reviewed the book with them.

Christmas Party

Our Christmas Party will be December 20 at 9:00. The elementary building is doing all of their parties at the same time so if you have children in other classes in this building you will be able to visit with both of them. I will be sending home a sign up sheet by the end of the week for things to bring. We are going to do a breakfast theme.

Language Test

This week's language test will be on action verbs, abbreviations, and contractions. Please study the notes in language notebook and the worksheets sent home.

Christmas Play

Our Christmas play date as of now is Thursday, December 19th. I am not sure what time it will take place. As soon as I find out I will update everyone.

Science

We will not be doing science again until after Christmas. We will be practicing for our Christmas play in the afternoons.

Language Test

The language test we took before Thanksgiving break on possessives and compound words has been thrown out. I will not count nor grade this test. We had so many questions during the test. I looked over these and could clearly see it was not going to be something that needed to be graded and counted. This is very hard for them to understand. We will revisit this skill after Christmas break at some point so we are able to spend a lot more time on the skill.

Friday

Tomorrow will be Auburn/Alabama day in our classroom. Dress your child in their favorite team for the Iron Bowl next weekend :) Also, I will be making the class vegetable soup to have for lunch tomorrow so you do not have to worry about sending lunch tomorrow.

Field Trip Update

There will be a change in the time we are leaving tomorrow. I talked to the 3rd grade who went to Landmark a few weeks ago. They left at 8 and made it there in time so we are going to meet at the school at 7:45. You do not have to send anything with you child tomorrow.

Lunch

If your child is ordering please email me or send me a note. I have had a few tell me they were suppose to order yet had a lunch in their lunch box. If they have a lunch in their lunch box I am not going to let them order unless I hear from you.

Language Test

Please review singular and plural possessives each night with your child. Plural possessives can be very hard to understand.

Grades

Grades should be posted now. I tried to post them last week but I am not sure what was going on or why they did not show. Please email me if you cannot see them!

Science Test

Our Science Test this week has been pushed back until Thursday. We were not able to get everything we needed finished so we could take it tomorrow.

Landmark Park

Our drivers for Landmark Park on Wednesday will be: Kim Stevens, Chrissy Martin, Mandie Baker, and Karla Harrison.

We will meet at the school at 7:20 and leave promptly at 7:30. We have to be at the park by 9:00 so I would like us to have plenty of time to travel there. Remember long solid color pants and Pike Field Trip t-shirt. If you do not have 1 please wear a red Pike shirt. Also, please wear close toed shoes. Lunch will be provided for them. It will be ham, sweet potatoes, black eyed peas, and corn bread.

Lunch

This week will begin the first week of hot meals at school. There is a menu posted on the Pike Lib. website for you to see what will be served. If you would like your child to purchase food from the lunchroom PLEASE send me a note with what they are to order, either daily or weekly, and their Pepi card or money.

Thanksgiving Break

School will be dismissing at 12:00 on Friday, November 22 for Thanksgiving Break!!

Landmark Park Field Trip

Our first field trip is next Wednesday, November 20th. I am not sure what time we will be leaving to go to Dothan but I will let you know as soon as I find out. I do know they are to wear solid color pants and shirts. They also are to wear closed toed shoes. I will update as I find out more information.

Test Schedule

Thursday: Spelling Trial and Math

Friday: Dictation, Language, Reading

Language this week we are working on plural, singular, and abbreviations. There are notes in language notebook.

Reading is on "Baby Bears." There is a test review page in their Reading Vocabulary notebook. They have to know 5 of the consonant diagraph words to spell on the test. Also, what an expository text is and the suffixes -ful and -less will be on there. There will be more notes taken this week. Make sure to read the story very well and ask them questions during and after reading.

We will not have a science test until next Tuesday but this week we are working on Chapter 8.

Lunch Tuesday

For lunch Tuesday we will be celebrating Kate, Houston, Carter, and Jackson's birthday. You do not have to send lunch on Tuesday, lunch will be provided by their parents. 

AR

We still do not have Internet in our building. I know it is very frustrating, trust me! If your child needs to take an AR test I am trying my best to send them to take 1 at the library. Mrs. Hinson is having to use her WIFI on her laptop so it takes some time. All the other classes in this building are doing the same. 

School Picture

I just found out this morning that even if you do not purchase your school pictures you must send them back in to the office, please send these back to me as soon as you can!

Reading Test

The test this week is on "Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out!" We have been taking notes in our reading vocabulary notebook. They should bring their little reading book home tonight for vocabulary and there are some pages in it that you can look over with them for the test. The main topic and key details page, narrative nonfiction page, and syllable page are great ones to look at for the test. All these things will be asked on the test. They also have a question on the test where they have to use 1 of the vocabulary words from the story (there will be a list on their test) to write something the turtles did in our story. They can pick any 1 of the 8 vocabulary words we have studies this week they would like. It has to makes sense and be complete sentence or sentences with correct punctuation.

Update on this week

Our internet is still down so I am not able to update the blog like I should because I'm having to do it on my phone. I am not going to be here on Friday so we will move our tests up 1 day. I have decided to change our reading test and language test. I will see how this goes! I am going to make our reading test up based on the story for the week. It will still include the skills we are working on for the week. It will not be just like the tests before, it will be more involved with the story. I just do not like the tests that come with our reading series. I believe they should be tested based on the story we are working on for the week. Language comes with our reading series so I am going to start doing the language for the week that has been provided for me with the reading. This week we are working on kinds of nouns (common and proper) and captial letters. This means on Thursday for their language test they will be tested on kinds of nouns and capital letters. We will work on those 2 things all week. I will update more about the reading test as the week goes on.

Softball Fundraiser

The PLAS Softball program is selling 4/6pk 24 oz Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Diet Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, Diet Dr. Pepper, and Sukist for $20 to raise money for equipment, field maintenance supplies, and upgrades. Orders are due Nov. 11 and pick up will be Nov. 15 from 3:00-5:00 in the gym. If you would like to purchase see Coach Park or a softball player.

Operation Christmas Child

We will be participating in Operation Christmas Child this year. Please send an item for a boy age 5-9 by October 29. Everyone also needs to send $.50 to cover the cost of shipping the box.

Acceptable items are:
Small Toys: stuffed animals, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small etch-a-sketch, light up toys with batteries.
School supplies: pens, pencils, notepads, crayons or markers, stamp pads, calculators, coloring books.
Hygiene Items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild soap bar in a bag, wash clothes, brushes or combs.
Other: hard candy, suckers, mints, gum, t-shirts, socks, sunglasses, hair bows, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights.

No chocolate is allowed. All candy must be double bagged in plastic bags. No toy guns, military men, knives, liquids, lotions, medications, vitamins, glass items, or aerosol cans.

Science Grades

Science has not been added to our achieve yet. When it is added I will post the grades I have. We are going to do Science as a semester grade. You will get a science grade on the next report card.

Pep Rally

Tomorrow's theme for the pep rally is "Haunt Hooper." Your child may wear their Halloween costume to school. Please no masks or accessories.

Short Week

We will not have any tests this week. We will begin new spelling and language next week. We will be reading a Readers' Theater story this week and will start a new story on Monday.

Fall Festival

The Fall Festival will be October 29. Our grade is in charge of the haunted hallway. This is a BIG job!!! We will need lots of volunteers to come help, decorate, and work inside the hallway please send me an email if you will be able to help. I will also need some volunteers to help take up tickets and work at the exit door. A note will come home later with time slots for those things.

Grades

Grades posted in Achieve will be final grades this afternoon. I will enter in all test/missing grades from this week today.

Note Going Home

There is a VERY important note going home that requires IMMEDIATE attention. PLEASE check your child's folder. You will understand when you read it but if you want to go you can email me tonight and I will take the first 10 or so I get in the morning when I turn my computer on. If I do not get all 10 in email then I will take the first few I get in the am. Your child does not have to go but we would like for everyone to go.

I will be absent on Friday (October 11) and the 9 weeks ends on Friday also. Since I will not be here we are going to move a couple of our tests up 1 day. I do not want the sub giving language in case there are some questions etc.

Chance to be a Cheerleader

Four girls will be chosen from grades K-4 through 6th Grade to be Cheerleaders for a Quarter at the game Friday night, one girl per quarter.  They will all be recognized at half-time.  It will cost $1 for a chance to be chosen and the drawing to select the Cheerleaders for a Quarter will take place at the pep rally on Friday.

Science Test

There will be NO Science test this week. We will begin Chapter 5 this week and have the test next Tuesday.

Tomorrow

I am sending home a language study guide that Carter's mom was so very nice to make us :) you do not have to send it back to school. THANKS MRS. CARROLL!!!!

Language Test Tomorrow

On our language test tomorrow they will be tested on:

Correcting the sentences
Contractions (they will be given words and have to write the contractions)
Nouns and Verbs
Making words plural
Adjectives
Antonyms

Hopefully this will help a little more with studying. I know it is pretty difficult to study for the test.

Grandparent's Day Attire

We will be wearing our new field trip shirts for Grandparents' Day. If you do not have 1 or did not order 1 any red Pike shirt will do.

Also, tomorrow on our Trial test and the test on Friday the bonus word should be spelled: Grandparents' Day. Apostrophe after s. We will go over it in the morning again before the test.

PTO BBQ Sale

The PLAS PTO is having a BBQ sale on October 11 at the school. They need volunteers to fix, hand-out, and deliver plates that day. They will need people from 9:30-2. If you, or someone you know, is able to help that day please let me or Cornelia Sanders know. They are able to work in shifts or all day depending on how much time is able to be committed. THANKS!!!

Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day will begin at 10:00 am in the cafetorium. PLEASE let me know how many will attend and if your child will be checking out.

BBQ Fund Raiser

The PTO is selling BBQ plates again this year. All proceeds will go to buying Mimios and projectors for classrooms. Each child is asked to sell at least 2 tickets. If you need more tickets they can be picked up in the office, or send me a note and I can get you some. Please return tickets in envelope provided no later than Friday, October 4. BBQ plates can be picked up Friday, October 11 from 10:30 am-2:00 pm at the school.

PLEASE help with this fundraiser. We are very excited about the Mimios. With our new reading series they will be a VERY invaluable tool for all of us. THANK YOU so much to the PTO for hosting this fundraiser.

Grandparent's Day

There are a few sheets going home today about Grandparent's Day. The interview sheet needs to be returned by Monday, but I am going to need it by Friday. They gave us our practice schedule this afternoon and we have a practice day Friday. There will be some other sheets going home tomorrow afternoon also.

I also need to know if your child will be checking out after Grandparent's Day. Please send me a note if they plan to do so.

Also, your child needs to bring a large flat rock by next Tuesday. They need 1 for each grandfather that will be attending.

We decided Country Day was easy for us to do in the SOUTH!!!

Thursday was parade day. We showed that 2nd Grade Rocks!!!!

Science Test

We will have a science test on THURSDAY this week not Tuesday. I spoke with Mrs. Campbell and we decided not to push it back another week so we are able to stay on track. A study guide will be sent home Wednesday night. It is on Chapter 3 Lessons 1-3.

Tests

I have tests graded and posted in achieve. The only one's not posted are a couple make-up tests. We had a very busy afternoon working on homecoming stuff so I did not get tests sent home but they will be sent home tomorrow.

Parade Agenda

We will meet in our classroom at 5:00, dressed in your Rock and Roll gear :)

Parents need to be parked and in place by 5:15. We will walk down as a class. The parade will begin behind the hospital at 5:30.

They don't know so if they ask why they do not have lunch tell them it is a surprise :) Please just send a drink and snack.

Test Change

Ok, I have heard from most of you and everyone seems to be ok with the tests being moved up.

So tomorrow will be reading comprehension, reading vocabulary, and math.

Thursday will be spelling, dictation, and language. If they do not make a 102 on Thursday they can retake on Friday.

We have an assembly at 9:00 on Friday and a pep rally at 11:00 so this will greatly help me on not being pushed for time.

Homecoming Wagon Money

Chances to kiss a football player or cheerleader are on sale this week for $.25. They will come around each morning and if your child would like to buy one please send their money in an envelope labeled for the chance.

We will take all normal tests this week except science. That time will be used to work on our wagon for the parade. I still want them to take their science books home so they can read the chapter and will be ready for the test.

Reading

We have switched to our new reading series. It has 2 books with it, a small reading book and a large reading book. We are still waiting on our workbooks and teachers editions to come in. Therefore, this week's test will be teacher made. It will be similar to the tests we have been taking thus far. We will have a vocabulary test and a comprehension test. The comprehension test will be on "Help! A Story of Friendship". The smaller book (Reading/Writing Workshop) is more for vocabulary context. I still want them to take it home so they can read the vocabulary sentences in the book. The story in that book will not be tested on. When everything arrives I will have more information and all the books should flow better.

Homecoming Change

We will now wear our Homecoming shirts on Thursday and Rock and Roll outfit for the parade. On Friday wear red, white, and blue.

Homecoming Parade

Our Homecoming Parade is Thursday, September 12 at 5:30. Children will need to be lined up behind the hospital by 5:15. Please send me an email to let me know if your child will be participating or not by Wednesday, September 4th. Thanks :)

Labor Day!!!!

Lunch Cards

You can now load money on your child's lunch card. You can load it through PayPal or by going to www.pepifoods.com.

Please let me know how much money you load on your child's card. Several have tried to use their card for ice cream and such and it does not work. It is a lot easier if you will just send me an email or note when you load money on the card. If your child is ordering please send their order to me, either daily or weekly. Especially ice cream orders so I will know if they are allowed to purchase it or not. You can still send cash if you do not want to load money on the card.

SCIENCE TEST TOMORROW!!!!

We will have our first science test tomorrow. Your child should have brought home their study guide and book. It is on Chapter 1 Lessons 1-3, reading over it again would also be helpful. They are not very long.

AR Begins Monday

We are going to begin AR on Monday. I sent home the bookmarks today for you to see where your child will be. PLEASE send those back on Monday so they are able to use them and know what books they can check out. 

I will be setting their goals and sending those home Monday. I will also give them a book on Monday from our classroom to read until we go to the library next week. Please do not forget to sign off on their Reading Log when they are ready to take a test.

Labor Day Weekend Boston Butt Sale

The Athletic Boosters will be selling pre-cooked 8-9lb. They will be $25 each and will be picked up Friday August 30 behind the gym between 2:30-6:00. You must pre-order by Tuesday, August 27th. To reserve your Boston butt pick a ticket up at the office. There will be a very limited amount available that day.

Homecoming

If anyone has a big metal utility wagon, preferably with sides that can let down :) please let me know! We need 1 for our Homecoming wagon.

Reading Comp Test and Vocabulary

I have graded most of the reading comprehension tests and vocabulary test. I have not recorded them yet but plan on doing that tomorrow and sending them home in their homework folders. I only counted 2 points off for misspelled words on the vocabulary test this time, but the future tests will not be like that. The vocabulary words are written on the sheet for the students to copy so there is no reason they should be misspelled. In the future if the word is misspelled it will be counted wrong. Please talk to your children about this and about neat handwriting. I do not want to count something wrong just because I am not able to read it.

Discipline Plan

I have had a few questions about my discipline chart so I will explain it :)

Everyone starts on Green (Ready to Learn) you can move up or down throughout the day. If your child moves up first they go to Yellow (Good Job), next is Orange (Excellent), then it is Red (Outstanding). If your child moves down they go to Blue (Reminder), Purple (Teacher's Choice), then Pink (Parent Contact). If your child down not get on Blue, Purple, or Pink all week then they get a treat on Friday.

This week I am letting the ones who moved to Blue on Monday and Tuesday win back their treat by not moving down again this week.

Math Test

We will have our math test on Thursday. It is pretty much a basic review of things from 1st grade. Students can look over pages we have been doing in class that are sent home in the Homework folder.

Back to School Rally!!!

The Back to School Rally is Thursday at 6:00 on the football field!!

Homecoming

Homecoming T-shirt order forms were sent home in folders yesterday and are due back Monday August 26th!! They are $15.00.

Homecoming is early this year, September 13. The Thursday before there will be a parade starting at 5:30, there will be a form in folders today with more information. PLEASE send it back by September 9th.

READING UPDATE

We are still waiting on our new reading series to come in. We have decided to go ahead and start in our old reading books with the first story (Come Back, Jack!). We will test on this story and the vocabulary next Wednesday August 21. We have already been reading the story and going over the vocabulary in class. If you have any questions please email me.

Field Trip Fun in January Also :)

We are going to take a trip to Montgomery to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. We will be seeing Goodnight Moon . We had to reserve tickets early because they sale out so quickly. The cost will be $16 for students and $18 for parents. We will again need 4 parent volunteers to go on the trip. I will take the first 4 I hear from. I will be asking for the money in the next few weeks, PLEASE do not send yet. The sooner we pay the better seats we will receive. I will post more information about departure time and our lunch plans closer to the trip.

We are looking forward to this trip!!!!!

Field Trip Fun

We are making plans for our first field trip!!

It will be November 20 and we will be going to Living History Week at Landmark Park in Dothan. We will need 4 drivers for our class. They ask that we do not bring parents; therefore, the parents will drop us off and pick us back up. This could be a great time to get some Christmas shopping done!! I know it is a few months away but I wanted to give everyone a heads up. I will take the first 4 drivers I hear from. We are very excited!!!

Important Information

*If you have not returned the blue folder with all signed paperwork, it is due by Monday, August 19.
* We will take a spelling and language test this week. Please see the homework tab for more information.  We will not take reading or math tests this week.
* We  will complete a sample language test today in class.  I will send it home for you to study.  
* Please send another one subject notebook.  We will be doing science a little different than last year, so that did not get added to the supply list.

WELCOME TO 2nd GRADE!!!!!

I am so excited for this new year and to have all of your children in my class. I know our year will be wonderful. 

We do not have our reading, language, math, or spelling books in yet :( therefore we will just be doing fun/educational things this week. I will be sure to let you know when our books arrive and we begin with our lessons. 

We do have our spelling workbooks in; therefore, we will have a spelling test this week. I am sending home our spelling words today (08/12/2013). 

I am not sure when we will begin AR but I will be sure to let everyone know that also. 

We will begin with our behavior chart tomorrow (08/13/2013).
